The Writer's Toolbox

Imagine you're browsing along the how-to write shelves of your favorite bookstore.  Now, as you trail your fingers across the spines of the books lined there, you come across one called "The Writer's Toolbox."

Intrigued, you slide it off the shelf and make your way over to the chairs where you settle in with whatever "chino" your drinking.  You open the book and start to read.

What do you want to find there?  What would you hope to see?

Let me know in the comments.

I think it would depend on the project. For instance, for my WIP, I'd love to see a 'life in the Middle Ages' book with common phrases they'd use, clothes, food items, etc.

In general, books about setting and descriptions are very helpful.

A magic wand that miraculously does all your editing would be nice. But I'll settle for an editing checklist.

I would like to see pictures which would inspire me come up with a story which relates to the pictures. It would be interesting to exchange stories then written to see what the other writers imagined of the same picture. So basically a book full of pictures.

I would love an instant babysitter, cook, cabbie - everyone I'd need to do what usually keeps me from writing. I can get the words into the story, but it's the distractions that really keep me from being as productive as I want to be.

But since those distractions are my husband and children, I can't really just ditch them.

Instant live-in grandmother who exists only to take care of my family? That would be nice.

I'd like to see....
A list of websites for historical facts.

A list of quirks for characters-sort of mix and match characteristics and quirks.

A list of story starters.

I want it to make "show don't tell" clear and easy to understand and to see in my writing.
